A representation of the world, society, humanity and what it has become today.
This piece, the entire tray itself is the universe at large. The wood plank that the candles have melted on, is a representation of Earth.
The combination of black and white represents the past, brought into today’s world, because humanity will always hold on to its history. The colourful areas as the present, and the beauty that today, the present, can bring. In this piece of work, the past coincides with the present, as the present is represented as new, evolved, learnt. While history is still carried into the present with us.
The blackened, fallen wicks from each candle that burnt, are representations of death and destruction that still occur today, as it did in the past. Humanity destroys one another for various reasons. And the death, the destruction that follows throughout history into the present; wars, terrorism, killings, corruption, inhumanity etc.
The wax that has melted outside the wood plank, Earth, is then the representation of humanity and their desire to not just control the world, but their strong desire for control spills outside the planet itself. The desire for more power, territory and ultimate control, spills into the galaxy, the Universe.
In the past, when technology was not as evolved, the desire and knowledge of what was outside earth was only a small portion to what it is today. With the thousands of satellites that orbit earth today, and countless numbers of unregulated research that goes on in space. The actions of humanity spill even outside the planet, into the galaxy. And though humanity has not gone very far into the universe, the footprints of human actions stay imprinted even outside the planet.

The making of What We’ve Become

Before the melting process. The candles were in the form of stars, and they were in the form of stars because of the belief that we are all born in the form of as much of perfection as we would allow ourselves to believe. At least from as far back as one can imagine.
Not just humans, but all living things alike. Plants, animals, insects etc. Nature was intended to be beautiful. Perfect the way it was.

Unfornate Event

Unfortunately, this piece which had been in planning for a couple of months came off its adhesive and broke the wax off the bottom. And after several attempts to fix it, I accepted its fate.
I am however, thankful that I managed to capture the process, which can be seen here on the Can’t Be Wax youtube channel.
The end of a beautiful piece.
